Video Games Evolve: A Brief History from Spacewars! to MMORPGs

Video Games Evolve

I was able to attend the opening of the Video Games Evolve exhibit last Monday at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. It’s amazingly cool that this kind of institution made the decision to host an exhibit on video games.

I had quite a bit of fun playing with Spacewars! and looking through the fantastic assortment of game tokens gathered from all over the country. I even found one from the Reno Hilton!

The antique collection was very impressive, including several arcade cabinets and a wall exhibit of old consoles. The more modern part of the display highlighted Civilization IV, Immune Attack, and, of course, Second Life, with a focus on how gaming and learning are beginning to overlap.

A gentleman from the Federal Reserve opened the remarks with a discussion about how gaming is a very promising approach to teaching financial literacy. The keynote was by Henry Jenkins, and he told the MIT-centric story of the importance of contributions of people in the Boston/Cambridge area to the evolution of the gaming industry. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of one speaker looking forward, while one looked back.

Unfortunately, the exhibit itself does not seem to have a web site.
