One recurring theme in geek media - and in geeky conversations over beer - over the last couple of years has been various awesome keyboards. Next time you find yourself having to make small talk with the geekily-inclined, just mention one of these devices.
- First came Das Keyboard, an all-black, totally blank keyboard. In addition to being badass, it has mechanical keys (that click!) and claims to make you type faster (because you can’t waste time looking at the keyboard). Read about it on Gizmodo, or buy one for $89.95.
- Next came the projected keyboard — I’ve wanted one of these ever since I read Johnny Mnemonic. The device projects a keyboard on any flat surface, and you type by tapping your fingers on the image. I’m going to have to see this to believe it! You can buy one for £149.00.
- Third is the LCD keyboard. Each key is a small LCD, and the keyboard configuration can be dynamically altered based on the application that you are running. To be honest, I’m not sure how you can touch type if the keyboard isn’t constant. And it would allow for some really entertaining hacks (imagine chasing the ‘enter’ key around the keyboard…) You may be able to buy it here.
- Finally, the keyboard made of wood. There’s actually a whole suite of peripherals. I’m not sure about the value of it as anything other than an alternative for interior decor, or a chance to make puerile jokes (I heart Gizmodo).
